Self funded project
3 years start date October 1st 2024
Project Summary
The project aims to develop advanced computational models for simulating the progressive collapse behaviour of wooden structures under various loading scenarios. It will involve the utilization of finite element analysis (FEA) techniques to investigate the response of timber buildings subjected to sudden structural failures, providing insights into failure mechanisms, load redistribution, and potential mitigation strategies.
The research will be conducted at Cardiff University (UK) in collaboration with the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (Spain). Access to state-of-the-art simulation software, high-performance computing facilities, and experimental laboratories will facilitate comprehensive analysis and validation of the developed models, ensuring the robustness and reliability of the research outcomes.
Engagement in this project will offer extensive opportunities for skill development and professional growth. Participants will gain hands-on experience in numerical modelling, structural analysis, and programming, honing their expertise in simulation techniques and timber engineering. Additionally, involvement in collaborative research endeavours and industry interactions will foster interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and networking, enhancing career prospects and contributing to the advancement of the field.
Academic Criteria
Candidates should hold or expect to gain a first-class degree or a good 2.1 (or their equivalent) in Engineering or a related subject.
Desirable skills:
· Strong background in structural mechanics and dynamics.
· Proficiency in finite element analysis (FEA) software.
· Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C++ for numerical analysis and model development.
· Problem-solving aptitude and attention to detail for troubleshooting simulation results and optimizing model performance.
· Understanding of building codes and standards related to structural design and safety.
Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)
