About the Project

There are two distinct streams of research that at present are largely separate, but for which insights into one could be highly significant for the other. These two streams are business model innovation for sustainability (BMIfS) and socio-technical transitions. BMIfS is about the micro-level of the corporation, entrepreneurial or established incumbent, undertaking organizational innovation to reach new markets in new ways over the short term, but with the aim of enhanced sustainability. Socio-technical transitions are about long-term, societal shifts in the ways in which systems of provision (health, food, housing, mobility) are produced and reproduced, but with the emphasis on how such systems of provision may change into more sustainable configurations. The proposed PhD would have a focus on the mobility system of provision either in an established industrialised country or an emergent one, or on a comparative basis. The intention is to understand the dialectic relationship between BMIfS and socio-technical change through an exploration of boundary-spanning by corporations, and processes of system confluence in socio-technical systems. The study would be conducted through the lens of the automotive industry, broadly defined to include both the manufacturing of artifacts (chiefly cars) and the provision of mobility as a service.

Keywords: Organizational innovation; zero carbon; socio-technical transitions; automotive
