The University of Cambridge ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership [DTP] is pleased to offer an interdisciplinary studentship available for admission in October 2022.
The studentship will be a three-year doctoral programme and will be co-supervised by Dr Denes Szucs (Psychology) and Dr Ros McLellan (Education).
DTP students will acquire a unique set of skills that will equip them for high-profile careers as leading social scientists, in academia or in other government, industrial, commercial and third sector organisations, either in the UK or elsewhere.
Project description
Maths anxiety (MA) is an academic anxiety about learning and doing mathematics. MA correlates negatively with maths performance in large samples and at the country level. MA is stronger in female than in male students and many mathematically well performing students also have high MA. MA may play key role in blocking educational progress towards mathematics-heavy career choices in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.The successful candidate would investigate MA in Black Caribbean and white working-class secondary school students. Currently we know strikingly little about MA in these population groups which are the least likely to pursue higher level STEM studies.
The successful candidate would test 400 students with questionnaires, computerized tests and a subsample of 80 students would also be interviewed about mathematical learning experiences. Results will inform theory and will contribute to providing educational and mental health intervention recommendations for schools.
Cambridge ESRC DTP studentships are open to all students who meet the required academic conditions.
An ESRC DTP studentship will cover Home rate fees and provide £15,609 p.a. in living costs (current rates). DTP students also receive a personal allowance for additional training costs, and can apply for further funding to pursue fieldwork, academic exchange, and collaboration with non-academic partner organisations.
