About the Project
CAST (www.cast-cancer.eu) is a Marie Skłodowska Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) funded by the European Commission. The ITN involves a consortium of 13 high-profile research, industry, charity and medical organisations across several EU countries as well as 10 partner organisations and is coordinated by Leiden University Medical Centre. A total of 15 PhD students will be employed to work in this project, of which 2 will be recruited by the University of Liverpool.
The University of Liverpool’s main role in this project involves studying the role of radiotherapy and in particular contact x-ray brachytherapy (Papillon) in the treatment of rectal cancer.
This job opening covers two 3-year research positions in the frame of a 3-year PhD doctoral programme, resulting in a PhD degree awarded by The University of Liverpool. The doctoral research will include research secondments hosted by CAST partners. Your PhD will be supervised by Prof Mark Pritchard and Prof Arthur Sun Myint. This first project is most suited to a person who has a medical qualification and is pursuing a career in a discipline involved in treating patients with rectal cancer (e.g. radiation oncology, medical oncology, colorectal surgery, gastroenterology). You will perform analyses of existing databases of more than 2500 rectal cancer patients who have been treated with contact x-ray brachytherapy (Papillon) at Clattrerbridge Cancer Centre by Professor Arthur Sun Myint over the last 27 years. This is the world’s largest cohort of patients treated by Papillon therapy. As well as patient outcomes there is also potential to assess treatment toxicity, quality of life and possibly health economics using existing datasets. In addition you will be involved in prospective studies involving rectal cancer patients receiving Papillon therapy. These will involve acquiring ethical approval and administering questionnaires and collecting/analysing patient derived biological samples to investigate potential biomarkers of response.
Qualifications and Experience
You should have a medical qualification and ideally some post qualification clinical experience, but should not already have a PhD. You should not have resided in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the recruitment date.

In view of the nature of these EU funded positions the successful applicants will be appointed as predoctoral research associates rather than as PhD students (salary scale £41,060.16 - £45,347.40 per annum). Tuition fees and laboratory bench fees are also included within the grant and will not need to be covered by the student. The salary is available for 3 years and the student will then an additional year (unfunded) in which to submit a PhD thesis.
