Catalytic Science

  • Full or part time
  • Application Deadline

  • Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

Project Description

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Cardiff Catalysis Institute (CCI) https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/cardiff-catalysis-institute, for work in collaboration with the UK Catalysis Hub https://ukcatalysishub.co.uk/ - a national network of catalytic science in the UK.

The project will include studying the molecular level properties controlling the performance of key catalytic systems. A wide range of techniques will be employed including synthesis, characterisation and testing of catalytic systems, but also, where appropriate, synchrotron and neutron based experimental methods (employing the UK Diamond synchrotron and ISIS neutron facilities), together with computer modelling.

The research will relate the following catalytic systems:
•supported nano-metallic catalysts used in a wide range of processes including oxidation, hydrogenation and C-H activation as well as photo-catalytic reactions
•microporous catalysts employed in hydrocarbon synthesis, isomerisation and oxidation catalysis
•metal oxide and carbide catalysts used in CO2 activation.

Much of the research relates to environmental remediation, renewable energy and synthetic fuels. The project will explore areas of key scientific and industrial importance and will train the student in advanced experimental and/or computational techniques.

Start date: 1st October 2019

Supervisor: Professor Richard Catlow https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/people/view/157882-catlow-richard

Funding Notes

Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students without further restrictions.
