Summary

LITAC (Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour) hosted by the School of Design, is offering a highly competitive PhD scholarship consisting of the award of tuition fees and an annual maintenance stipend that matches UKRI rates (17,668 GBP in 2022/23) along with a significant element of training and development expenses also incorporated within the Scholarship package.

One of the major societal challenges is textile waste management, with currently the majority of used textiles being incinerated or ending up in landfill. Each year the UK alone sends ~1M tonnes of textiles to landfill. A linear economy with materials to products to waste, is not sustainable.

This project aims to form a circular economy for cellulosic based textiles. We will use recycled cellulosic fibres to make composites, materials that can replace fossil fuel-based plastics, which at the end of use can themselves be converted back into cellulosic fibres, to be reused all over again in the formation of composites and textiles.
