About the Project

The University of Strathclyde’s Centre for Energy Policy (CEP) is offering an exciting opportunity for a fully funded PhD Politics to explore the broader economic and societal outcomes of efforts to meet net zero/climate change targets such as industrial decarbonisation, heat decarbonisation, energy efficiency and electrification of transport. Crucially, this involves setting research questions with a focus on outcomes of concern to public policy decision makers and developing theory based applied economic and political economy methodologies to explore how impacts emerge from different actions and how consequences of concern may be affected through policy intervention. We are primarily interested in research proposals that incorporate/or have the potential to incorporate the use of computable general equilibrium (CGE) modelling through scenario development and analysis to understand the impacts and public policy facing consequences of different decarbonisation actions, pathways and policy interventions.

This is an exciting opportunity to study alongside researchers based at the University of Strathclyde’s Centre for Energy Policy (CEP) who are working with government and industry partners to address the public policy challenge of transitioning to prosperous, sustainable, and equitable net zero economies. You will have the opportunity to train in theoretically grounded computable general equilibrium modelling methods applied in a political economy context considering energy and climate policy challenges in a wider public policy context, with focus on trade-offs and tensions across a range of policy agendas, including ‘just transitions’ and regional development challenges, and involving investigation of a range of public and private climate finance solutions.

The Centre brings together a unique blend of economy-wide modelling, political economy and public policy analysis experience and expertise to understanding the wider economic and societal outcomes of a wide range of decarbonisation actions at local, regional, national and international levels and how economically and politically feasible pathways to net zero can be identified and shaped.

As a CEP PhD researcher, not only will you be able to draw on this expertise as part of your PhD studies, but you will also have the opportunity to develop and apply your learning through the live research projects that CEP leads, with focus on real and measurable impact with key policy decision makers within the UK and internationally. These are funded by organisations such as UK Research and Innovation, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation and Innovate UK and CEP’s research is actively contributing to ongoing net zero policy discussions and decision-making.

You will also have access to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Graduate School which brings together postgraduate research students from a variety of disciplines, as well as colleagues in the School of Government and Public Policy in which CEP is based.

Funding Notes

Applications are welcomed from eligible International Students, but if successful, would need to pay the difference between Home & International Fees around approximately £10k per annum for FT duration of study.
