Characterisation of human respiratory exposure to automotive particulate matter emissions

About This PhD Project

Project Description

Coventry University (CU) is inviting applications from suitably-qualified graduates for a fully-funded PhD studentship.

Increasing urbanisation of developing countries means that most communities suffer from air pollution. Tackling air quality is a complex task involving research of sources of pollution, effect of different pollutants on human health, and finding pollution mitigation solutions. Although the general link between the pollution and human health is established, the amount of particulate matter entering the body is difficult to quantify. Even more difficult is estimation of how this exposure depends on various factors (respiratory system size, shape, state of health etc.)

This aim of this project is to develop modelling framework for assessment of human exposure to particulate matter (PM), and demonstrate its capabilities to characterise PM transport into the human body for a range of exposure scenarios. This will be achieved using Computational Fluid Dynamics together with small scale experimental work in simplified configurations similar to human airway geometry. Of particular interest will be development of methodology for modelling of complex boundary conditions for airway systems, and characterisation of particle transport and deposition properties.

Start Date: September 2020

Duration of Study: Full-Time – between three and three and a half years fixed term

Training and Development

The successful candidate will receive comprehensive research training including technical, personal and professional skills.
All researchers at Coventry University (from PhD to Professor) are part of the Doctoral College and Centre for Research Capability and Development, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities.

Entry criteria for applicants to PHD

• A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average.
the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a 3.5 years
• a minimum of English language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component)
• excellent analytical skills and a deep knowledge of Fluid Mechanics are essential
• experience in CFD modelling, coding (in particular Matlab) and experimental flow work are desirable
