Chemical Synthesis of Novel Antimicrobial Peptides that Target Multidrug Resistant Bacteria

  • Full or part time
  • Application Deadline

  • Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

Project Description

The continued emergence of antimicrobial resistance is a major global concern. The rapid development of resistance mechanisms by bacteria, as well as the lack of new structurally and mechanistically distinct classes of antibiotics, means that new antibiotics and antibiotic targets are desperately needed. Non-ribosomally synthesized peptides (NRPs) are a rich source of antimicrobial compounds. This interdisciplinary project will involve the development of new synthetic methods to access novel NRPs and their analogues, as well as evaluation of their biological activity and mechanism of action.

Academic criteria - a minimum of 2.1 honours in a relevant subject. Candidates with a 2.2 honours degree and a suitable MSc may also be considered.

Eligibility - normally, to be eligible for a full award a student must have no restrictions on how long they can stay in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the studentship (with some further constraint regarding residence for education).

Funding Notes

EPSRC funding is available for 3.5 years starting in October 2019. This is a full-time, fully-funded studentship, covering tuition fees at the home rate plus a stipend (currently £14,777 per annum).
