This project aims to achieve the following objectives:
- To assess the applicability and relevance of Western career models/theories and suitable theoretical lenses (e.g. boundaryless careers, Kaleidoscope Career Model Etc.) to the experiences of women in non-Western settings.
- To add to, and expand our understanding of women’s challenges/experiences in developing their careers in the non-Western context.
The research on the career choices and work-family balance of professional women in Western and non-Western contexts has received increasing attention in recent years (Knowles and Mainiero, 2021; Baruch and Sullivan, 2022) due to the increasing number of dual-career couples. The majority of existing studies and the theoretical lens focus on the difficulties and challenges women experience in career development in the Western context. However, very limited empirical research has been developed by exploring these issues in the non-Western context. One such contribution is the proposed DoS’s PhD study of Chinese women in health settings which suggests that Western theoretical frameworks are limited in capturing their experiences. Therefore, this research seeks to develop our understanding further by asking “what specific challenges/difficulties do professional women experience in developing their careers in the non-Western cultural context? And how do they deal with them?"
