Digitisation is transforming urban mobility. Digitisation of vehicles (e.g. autonomous cars), infrastructure (e.g. smart motorways), and services (e.g. integrated mobility platforms) can empower multimodal urban mobility and create an integrated transport system with seamless intermodal connections.

The ‘Transport and Planning’ research group invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the area of city-scale big data in urban mobility. Under the supervision of Dr Haitao He, Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Urban Mobility and Intelligent Transport, the PhD student will have the unique opportunity to explore the wide application of big data in transport system planning, design, management, operation and control, addressing issues including efficiency, resilience and sustainability challenges in urban mobility.

We are seeking a talented student who is enthusiastic in developing innovative urban mobility solutions in this evolving field. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the topic, the candidate could have a background in civil engineering, electric engineering, computer science, optimisation, control, mathematics or any relevant subject. The candidate should have strong analytical and programming skills and ideally have experience working with large data sets. The successful candidate will have the chance to conduct innovative research with leading researchers both within the UK and internationally.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. A relevant master’s degree and/or employment experience will be an advantage.

Funding Notes

The three-year studentship provides a tax-free stipend of £15,009 a year (2019/20 rates – stipend will rise in line with the level set by the Research Council) for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. The funding is only available for UK/EU/EEA nationals.
