Project Description

About the Project
The contamination of water resources is a major global concern as enormous quantities of wastewater containing heavy metal ions (HMI) are discharged. Consequently, it is highly desirable to develop stable new materials that will remove such toxic components quickly, with high efficiency. Conjugate microporous polymers (CMPs) are materials with great potential to address the problem because of their chemical stability, high specific surface area, porous structure, and excellent chemical tuneability (through variation of the starting materials). In this project, we will be synthesizing some CMPs with good dispersibility in water and explore the adsorption capacity and removal efficiency for different HMIs.

Why Choose this Opportunity
You will have the opportunity broaden your chemistry skills as you prepare and characterise various CMPs. You will also use (or gain!) basic analytical chemistry skills as you need to determine the levels of HMIs in model waste waters. You will also learn to evaluate your results, and work with other researchers to develop design rules to enhance the functionality of your materials. You will therefore gain skills and experience typical for a modern materials laboratory.
This project will require you to collaborate with other members of the research group with diverse technical backgrounds, thus improving your communication, teamwork and networking skills. You will furthermore be developing a range of additional transferable skills, including presentation, scientific writing, and project and time management. Finally, you will be interacting with students from all over the world learning from their culture and skills, adding to your professional and personal development

About You
Full training will provided for all aspects of this project. In addition to your supervisory team you will be assigned a PhD mentor for the duration of your project, who will provide support and help you to identify any additional training needs or opportunities.
Skills and knowledge that are desirable (but not essential are): synthetic chemistry (vacuum line), analytical skills, team work and time management.

About the programme
The Cabot Institute Masters by Research is a unique opportunity to work with a leading supervisor to deliver a one-year research project that you are passionate about. The programme will bring together exceptional students from all backgrounds with a common mission – protecting the planet and securing our future. As well as learning from your supervisor, you will learn from your fellow students; coming together to share your ideas and developing your problem-solving skills as part of an interdisciplinary team over the year. As well as being hosted within the Cabot Institute you will have a direct relationship within the relevant School for your research area, allowing you to fully take advantage of a wide-ranging research community.
Alongside your research project, you will benefit from a unique personal development and transferable skills training schedule. These unaccredited, optional events will give you the opportunity to come together with your peers to improve your research skills and develop an innovative approach to the global challenges we face today. You will also be encouraged to propose your own interests for a seminar series, giving you a unique platform to mould your studies and get involved directly with the programme. The training schedule will focus on:
• Interdisciplinarity & Collaboration
• Innovation & Enterprise
• Making your research a success
• Research communications
• Ignite your interests (your chance to propose ideas for a seminar series)
You will also gain access to the Cabot Institute’s network of experts across academia, government, business and industry via networking events. These opportunities will not only support your research, but give you the edge in your future career, whatever that may be.
