Climate change-related disclosures: a legitimacy perspective from accounting professionals

Project Description

Concern about the undeniable, unpredictable, and risky nature of climate change increases pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Organizations are increasingly required to monitor and report on their progress regarding climate change. Consequently, accounting professionals are in a position to help organisations identify potential problem areas and recommend opportunities to improve energy efficiency and deliver long terms value and manage risks associated with climate change. Accounting professionals are trying to institutionalise climate change-related disclosure practices, thereby providing guidance towards organisations. However, there is a lack of extant research in relation to what type of mechanisms accounting professional groups use to legitimate the concept of a good (or bad) disclosure practices. This study will address this void. Thus, the main objective of this project is to review climate change related disclosure initiatives undertaken by accountancy professional bodies through drawing on available resources, including reports and interviews with stakeholders.
