Project Description

This project will explore the effects of combined high strain rate and high thermal flux load conditions on building structures with a particular engineering focus towards off-axis blast loads and oblique angles of dynamic response. Prior research studies examining combined thermal and blast effects have only considered a uniform heat and pressure envelope irrespective of the source angle. This research will crucially extend the body of knowledge to account for weak versus minor axis structural disparity in conjunction with differential thermal gradients, physical shielding, material expansion and conductance across primary column cross-sections.

Resistance curves for off-axis or asymmetric actions will be ratified and developed for end-user adoption. This project presents an exciting opportunity to investigate an area of considerable interest and value with the enthusiastic support of an internationally renowned science organisation and renowned University research group. The research will be a blend of state-of-the-art computational analysis and privileged experimentation at a national air blast test facility. This doctorate would suit a talented and motivated graduate in Civil & Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics or allied disciplines. A passion to learn complex computational structural dynamics and computational fluid dynamics techniques to solve engineering problems is very important; combined with an enthusiasm to conduct well thought out supporting experiments focused upon a clearly defined goal.
