Coach’s Companion: A Sport Based Joint Cognitive System

Project Description

Knowledge to support coaching and team selection is diverse, ranging from tacit knowledge, obtained through interactions with people, to statistical data based on performance. This research will investigate the design and potential benefits of a knowledge system to assist coaches to systematically manage their knowledge. The proposed research project will leverage recent research from the manufacturing domain by Peter Denno (under the supervision of C.E. Dickerson and J.A Harding) using Jupyter Notebooks to integrate technologies and Apps.

A “system of systems” approach will be adopted for this research in which all the contributing joint cognitive systems are assumed to interact – hence the proposed knowledge system must aid humans who interact with machines and with other humans. Consolidation and background analysis of the multiple sources of knowledge and experience are essential elements of this research. For example, it is envisaged that an implementation of procedures such as Principal Component Analysis will run in the background to synthesise the coach’s observations with various sources of knowledge for the purpose of discovery of problem and solution drivers.

Different approaches to analyse the knowledge and experience will be examined including the approach taken by the US Oakland A’s baseball team about 10 years ago when they hired a statistician to relook at the traditional use of data collection for professional baseball.

The elements of research would include systems engineering, knowledge engineering, and sport technology. The research outcomes can benefit small or disadvantaged enterprises and teams, as well as large.

All applications are made online, please select the school/department name under the programme name section and include the quote reference number.
