CoastWatchers: A citizen observatory for mitigating coastal hazards

Project Description

This fully funded PhD studentship provides an excellent opportunity to take a leading role in the rapidly expanding area of citizen science.

The exciting, interdisciplinary project will create and demonstrate the effectiveness of a citizen coastal observatory, focused on understanding nature-based coastal protection schemes and their role in reducing the physical impacts of coastal flooding and erosion. It will use a combination of natural and social science to bring together the knowledge and skills of lay-citizens with diverse forms of Information and Communication Technology. The outcomes of this project could be transformative for future practice in coastal monitoring and public engagement with planning coastal protection.

This project offers the opportunity to work with world-class researchers from Lancaster Environment Centre and their partners. It will allow the student to develop a deep understanding of the resilience of natural coastal systems and the new interdisciplinary skills needed to address global environmental challenges.
