About the Project

Applications are invited to join a large research team working on ceramics and coatings based in Henry Royce Institute, University of Manchester in collaboration with National Physical laboratory. The successful candidate is expected to spend a significant time at NPL depending on the project requirement. This project is aimed at developing coating systems using a novel coating technique and providing measurement infrastructure to enable the design and manufacture of surface engineering solutions to meet the challenges of net zero carbon emissions and the sustainability of materials. It will do this through the development of robust procedures for the acquisition of assured data for the properties and performance of advanced coatings produced by a novel coating technique. The focus will be on development of a novel coating technique and the measurement of adhesion and microstructural characterisation as well as micromechanical testing of cohesive and interfacial strength. The assured data and improved understanding of the relationship between mechanical properties and microstructure will form the basis of digital twins of coating performance that can be used in the design of new products.

Academic background of candidates

Applicants are expected to hold, or about to obtain, a minimum upper second class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Physical Science and Engineering related topics. A Masters degree in a relevant subject and/or experience in Physical science and Engineering subject area/discipline  is desirable.
