Full Project Detail
Applications are invited for a doctoral researcher focusing on the development of data-driven modelling techniques to harness the energy flexibility in buildings.

Decarbonisation. Electrification. Coordination. These items are key to achieving the UK’s new climate target of net zero by 2050. To decarbonise our buildings, we will need to electrify our heating systems to use our renewable energy resources. However, the new heating demands will not always coincide with when the wind blows or the sun shines.

This position will work towards developing modelling and optimization techniques to quantify the capacity, availability, and reliability of energy flexibility in groups of buildings. The researcher will use data from 60 commercially operated buildings on campus to demonstrate their approach.

The successful candidate will be working with a cohort of doctoral researchers using dynamic thermal modelling and optimization techniques to aid in the operation and design of the built environment.

Entry requirements
Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Applicants having a background in subjects relating to building energy use, mechanical or control engineering, data science, and computing science are particularly welcomed. A relevant master’s degree and/or employment experience will be an advantage.

Funding Notes

The three-year studentship is intended to start in January 2020. It provides a tax-free stipend of £15,009 a year (2019/20 rates – stipend will rise in line with the level set by the Research Council) for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. International students may apply but must be able to fund their own living costs as the studentship will cover international tuition fees only.
