In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering was ranked first for research environment in Architecture, Built Environment and Planning, with 95% of research rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ for its influence on society, the economy and policy. The School boasts world class facilities, with £1.4m recently invested in its 3,000m2 laboratory and one of the fastest High-Performance Computer clusters in the UK.

Full Project Detail

Applications are invited for a doctoral researcher focusing on the development of data-driven modelling techniques to harness the energy flexibility in buildings.

Decarbonisation. Electrification. Coordination. These items are key to achieving the UK’s new climate target of net zero by 2050. To decarbonise our buildings, we will need to electrify our heating systems to use our renewable energy resources. However, the new heating demands will not always coincide with when the wind blows or the sun shines.

This position will work towards developing modelling and optimization techniques to quantify the capacity, availability, and reliability of energy flexibility in groups of buildings. The researcher will use data from 60 commercially operated buildings on campus to demonstrate their approach.

The successful candidate will be working with a cohort of doctoral researchers using dynamic thermal modelling and optimization techniques to aid in the operation and design of the built environment.
