About the Project

Type I hypersensitivities, or allergic immune responses, are defined by the induction of antigen-specific Th2 cells and IgE antibody production, involving activation of the adaptive arm of the immune system during allergen exposure. Epithelial cells are one of the first lines of defence against allergen contact and epithelial cell-allergen interactions have been identified as one of the first key events in the adverse outcome pathway for allergic sensitisation and a key area of focus for future research. This PhD will examine the role of skin and airway epithelial surfaces in influencing the immune outcome after exposure to different allergens.

This studentship provides a unique opportunity to work in a novel and innovative area of interdisciplinary research that will address these issues and will, in turn, lead to a better understanding of the processes that lead to allergy. The successful candidate will be supervised by a multidisciplinary team including experts in immunology and food allergy.

Students should have, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second-class degree in Biology or another relevant Science discipline. Preference will be given to candidates who also have a Master’s degree in a relevant area with relevant research. The successful candidate must be willing to travel to Unilever when required.

Funding Notes

This full-time, four-year studentship is funded by BBSRC and Unilever. Eligibility is limited to UK citizens. It will cover the cost of PhD fees at the Home rate and a tax-free stipend of (to be confirmed) per annum and starts in October 2021.
