Project Description

All human societies have art, and the study of beauty is termed aesthetics. The traditional approach to studying art and aesthetics has been based around the subjective judgment of human critics, and this is fundamentally limited. I hold the philosophical position that we only fully understand a phenomenon when we can build a machine that reproduces it.

The proposal is to use computers as an operational and objective approach to art aesthetics. One such approach would be to use predictive machine learning to understand art and aesthetics, and this removes personal opinions and expectations in the art because all decisions are made by machine. I have applied this approach to understanding music from around the world. It could also be applied to other art forms such as paintings.
