About the Project

Subject area: Computational Engineering

Start date: April 2019 but flexible

Project description: A large scale human body model to study various forms of transport, including radiation (diagnostics) and bioheat transfer (entropy and ageing), is the primary aim of this project. A unified approach to study any form of transport as efficiently and as accurately as possible using state of the art computational methods is required.

Such a model will be tested to see how different material properties of different parts of the body affect transport and to determine optimal direction of scanning for diagnostic purposes. The second part of the study will investigate the link (if any) between entropy and ageing in a human body. Ageing will be represented through change in material properties and different form of long-term illnesses, including cardiovascular and degenerative diseases.

The successful candidate will be integrated into the Computational Biomedical Engineering Group and will be encouraged to present the work at national and international conferences and promoting new research collaborations. Initial part of the training will include programming, high performance computing, mesh generation, segmentation and interpretation of results.

Eligibility
Candidates should hold a first or upper second class (2.1) honours degree in engineering, physics or mathematics or a relevant subject area and have interest in modelling, transport, programming, high performance computing and human body mechanisms.

The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees and an annual stipend for UK/EU candidates but tuition fees only for international candidates.

Funding Notes

UK/EU candidates: The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £14,296.

International candidates: The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees only.

There will be additional funds available for research expenses.
