Three year full time studentship in the Department of Biological and Medical Sciences

Eligibility: Only open to UK/EU applicants (who must be permanently resident in UK/EU)


Start date: 4th April 2016

Bursary: £14057 pa (pro rata as April start) for academic year 2015/16 & fees

Closing date: 28th February 2016

Applicants should be of the highest quality and capable of submitting a PhD thesis within 3 years. Requirement a good Honours degree (2.1 or equivalent).

EU applicants must have a valid IELTS Academic test certificate minimum score level 6 in each of the four areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking with overall minimum score 7.0 issued since the 23rd April 2015 by an approved test centre please see web site below. Or an undergraduate degree awarded by a recognised UK university within the last two years.

Project summary

The project involves a systems biology approach using computer modelling and experimental approaches to examine the role and control of glycine homeostasis in the Human brain where glycine is an important inhibitory neurotransmitter.

The synaptic action of glycine is terminated by glycine transporters present in the plasma membrane of glial cells or pre-synaptic terminals, respectively, and glycine is synthesised from serine by the enzyme serine hydroxymethyltransferase. Understanding how the nervous system controls glycine homeostasis and the potential effects of this on glycine receptors may lead to new targets for therapeutic of pathological alterations in synaptic function.

The appointed individual will gain experience and expertise in advanced computer modelling approaches as well as in vitro receptor have the opportunity to regularly disseminate her/his work at national and international meetings and to participate in outreach activities such as Science Festivals and talks in schools.
