The Department of Computer Science at Swansea University invites applications for a four-year PhD studentship, jointly funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC, under the ‘Industrial CASE’ scheme) and Tata Steel.

The overall aim of this project is to explore Model-Based Engineering concepts in the context of Industry 4.0, Smart Manufacturing, and Cyber-Physical Systems. Industry 4.0 and Model-Based Engineering (MBE) play a crucial role in the design, fabrication and maintenance of complex products. MBE is critical in understanding the underlying systems’ complexity and connecting the required modelling methodologies and tools.

In this studentship project, you will face the challenge of applying MBE concepts in an industrial setting within Tata Steel’s (co-sponsor) environment. The aim is to develop a prototype digital framework based on MBE with the long-term aim to support autonomous decision making. Many of Tata Steel’s manufacturing processes are knowledge intensive. Another challenge will be to enable the framework to capture those.

Candidates will need to show experience in (a combination of) the following skills:

- Strong background in modelling of systems, or related concepts of theoretical computer science like formal languages
- Proficient programming skills, in particular, related to model transformation or similar (e.g. compiler design and programming)
- Formal methods
- Real-life applications

The studentship will include an internship period at Tata Steel.

Funding Notes

This is a four-year fully funded EPSRC I-CASE scholarship, which covers UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £20,000 per annum.
