Condition based assessment of aged masonry arch bridges

Project Description

Masonry arch bridges forms part of our critical infrastructure and their reliability and integrity are vital for ensuring national economic activity and prosperity. However, the vast majority of masonry arch bridges are now old and showing significant signs of distress. Reliable assessment tools to predict their long term behaviour are essential to determine whether protective measures are necessary to prolong their life.

The aim of this project is to couple remote sensing techniques with sophisticated computational analysis tools for a more efficient condition based assessment of old and deteriorated masonry arch bridges. In particular, data acquired from photography, laser scanning and ground penetrating radars will be integrate and used to provide a comprehensive description of the “as is” bridge geometry and condition. Such data will then be processed and inputted into computational models able to perform structural assessment and provide valuable information for asset management decisions.

The suitability and robustness of the procedures developed will be assessed on scaled masonry arch bridges to be constructed in the laboratory and showcased on a full scale masonry arch bridges. The proposed studentship relates to the £1.82M EPSRC grant (EP/T001305/1) “Exploiting the resilience of masonry arch bridge infrastructure: A 3D multi-level modelling framework” which is a joint project with the University of Sheffield and Imperial College, London.
