About the Project

AHRC Studentship for Doctoral Researchers in the Arts and Humanities

Confronting Canonicity and Promoting Diversity: Gender and Contemporary Concert Programming

The Open University has available an AHRC funded PhD studentship through the Open-Oxford-Cambridge DTP consortium to start 2022/2023. It is a collaboration award with the Donne Foundation.

This PhD project aims to challenge the gender inequality of classical-music concert programming and investigate the frequent tokenism and convenience programming (where the same few women appear in concert programmes), which is leading to the canonisation of a handful of women composers that ignores the vast collection of women’s music that exists beyond the few in circulation.

The Open University is internationally recognized for innovative research across the Arts and Humanities. We host a number of major AHRC- and ESRC-funded research projects. We have a strong commitment to cross-disciplinary work, to national and international public engagement, and to creative partnerships with a range of non-university partners.

All UKRI-funded doctoral students will be eligible for a full award. This covers all tuition fees and provides a maintenance grant at the standard RCUK rate for CDAs (which was £16,159 p.a. in 2020/21). Applicants should consider the AHRC's eligibility requirements before making an application and contact the university if in doubt.

DONNE is a charitable foundation that aims to make a positive change in the fight against gender inequality within the music industry. Their main goal is to celebrate, advance, and amplify women in music so that they are seen, heard, and appreciated for their talent so they can leave a legacy of inspiration for future generations.
