About the Project

Pain is normally seen as a negative experience in one’s own body – an experience that needs to be managed and minimized. In certain professions, pain is often hidden from colleagues to avoid stigma and for fear of missing out on opportunities. In this project, I would like to explore how people relate to pain, manage it, and make sense of it as part of their everyday life. The dominant framework to analyse these processes is Erving Goffman’s work on stigma, life as performance, framing, and the distinction between the visible (front stage) and back stage (invisible). In terms of methods, it would be mostly qualitative and involve interviews and observations, if possible.
