About This PhD Project

Project Description

The Sheffield group has pioneered the search for dark matter using Sodium Iodide crystals and is now participating in the search for a galactic particle dark matter signals using the so-called annual modulation signal as part of the new COSINE-100 experiment in South Korea. This world-leading experiment recently published first results in Nature. The project will focus on analysis of the running experiment comprising ~100 kg to search for a dark matter annual modulation signal observation of which has recently been confirmed by the DAMA collaboration in Italy. There will also be opportunity to contribute to design and test of the new crystals being developed for an upgrade to a 250 kg ultra-low background detector. Part of this work includes use of test facilities in the UK’s Boulby underground site and at Sheffield. There will be opportunity for 6-12 month Long Term Attachment to the Institute of Basic Science in South Korea or at Yale University (USA) and possibly at the Antarctic South Pole where we plan to build an experiment to make use of the Southern Hemisphere location.
