About the Project

Fully Funded PhD Scholarship in Cross-University Team to Research Business Scaling at University of Galway for the HEA/NSRP Atlantic Futures Project Work Package 2.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, funded PhD scholarship starting in September 2023 affiliated to the Management Discipline at the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics at the University of Galway.

Detailed Project Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a Higher Education Authority/ North South Research Programme. It offers enviable possibilities to collaborate with other university researchers, business and policy makers across the West of Ireland – north and south, and to contribute to a large-scale project with impact on business and policy. The position offers an excellent opportunity to pursue a career in academia, consulting, public policy or industry. The funding includes stipend and fees as well as generous allowances for research travel, training and equipment. This position is located at University of Galway. It will investigate business scaling in the Atlantic Corridor. Scaling a business is a complex task and scaling a business from the western edge of the westernmost landmass in Europe brings additional challenges, but also opportunities.

The PhD studies will involve developing case studies of indigenous and foreign-owned businesses that have successfully scaled in the West of Ireland (north and south), focusing specifically on the issues involved in scaling products, markets, teams and processes, practices for their effective resolution, and scaling-specific supports to enable scaling success from the West of Ireland. It will include a regional dimension of business scaling.

This position at University of Galway is affiliated with the Management Discipline at the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics, University of Galway, and associated with the Center for Entrepreneurial Growth and Scaling (CEGS). The PhD student will be enrolled on Structured PhD programme and supervised by Professor Esther Tippmann. While working as part of a cross-institutional team, the successful candidates will be affiliated with one institution, here University of Galway. Each position will be dedicated to covering a distinct area of business scaling in the Atlantic Corridor. The indicative topics, that may evolve to fit candidate expertise and project needs, include:

  • Micro-perspective: the role of founders, teams and people in scaling.
  • Meso-perspective: organisation and firm factors, esp. internationalisation in scaling.
  • Macro-perspective: external (regional) supports.

Living allowance (Stipend): €23,500 per annum [tax-exempt scholarship award]. Computer equipment and funding for travel (e.g. to conferences) will be provided in addition to the stipend.

University fees:

€5,370 per annum [fees for EU students]. Non-EU students who are not in receipt of any other scholarship that supports the payment of full Non-EU fees are eligible to apply for the PhD International Merit Scholarship Scheme at University of Galway. If successful, this scholarship award reduces course fees from the full international level to EU level.

Start date: 1st September 2023

Academic Entry Requirements:

Masters degree to honours standard (or equivalent international qualification). Other evidence that signifies suitability for the programme.

Candidates should demonstrate (essential requirements):

  • Normally a Masters degree to honours standard (or equivalent international qualification) in a relevant area, such as Business, Management, Entrepreneurship, Public Policy, or Social Sciences
  • Honours 2.1 undergraduate degree in a relevant area, such as Business, Management, Entrepreneurship, Public Policy, or Social Sciences
  • Experience of independent research
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills - Highly self-motivated - Ability to work independently and as part of a team - Willingness to travel
