Digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 are areas of increasing interest to industry and the research sectors, and this PhD project will explore the role of cutting-edge immersive technologies, i.e., Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR), for future manufacturing.
This is a doctoral Cotutelle project between Deakin University (Australia) and Coventry University (UK). As such, the candidate will receive research training and supervision from both Universities as well as access to facilities and laboratories in both locations.
There’s an urgent need to explore the role of immersive technologies in the context of future digital engineers which will benefit from solutions based on dynamic mixed reality (XR) visualisation appropriately guided by AI methods to carry out repair works with increased efficiency. The research seeks to develop a novel approach that can identify elements of a task; observe and understand the current states; and intervene with corrective guidance, and help closing the loop between the operators’ actions and the guided steps. Moreover, the new approach will be crucial to achieve systems’ integration between an engineering system (PLM, MES, QMS, CAD, etc.) with the XR overlay and data processing tools.
The project will aim to contribute to the following research questions:
- How to develop XR solutions to assist the digital engineers of the future in carrying out complex maintenance tasks (e.g., inspection, servicing, installation, modification, etc, improving efficiency and providing adaptive and consistent results?
- How to integrate XR solutions engineering systems for real-time communications and updates.
The successful PhD Student will be awarded a scholarship from Deakin University with the supervision team being drawn from Deakin University and Coventry University. The PhD Student will graduate with two testamurs, one from Deakin University and one from Coventry University, each of which recognises that the program was carried out as part of a jointly supervised doctoral program. The program is for a duration of 3.5 years.
The PhD Student is anticipated to spend at least 12 months of the total period of the program at Coventry University, with the remainder of the program based at Deakin University.
Project to start May 2022
