Project Description

Ceramic vessels in London thought to have had a ‘ritual’ function include tazze, unguentaria, face pots and triple vases, found in a wide range of deposits including domestic rubbish pits as well as in cemeteries and temple sites. This PhD project will employ organic residue analysis to identify the contents of ca. 400-600 such vessels. For tazze (shallow bowls with decorative rims and tall stems), the student will also carry out the first detailed survey of sooting and burning patterns.

This PhD will be jointly supervised by the Universities of Bristol and Reading and MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology). We expect the student to be mainly based in Bristol in the 2nd and 3rd year (residue analysis), but possibly in Reading during the 1st year (research on Roman London, Romano-British pottery, sample collection).
