Project Description

This project offers an exciting opportunity to have a major role in a fully funded research study which will run alongside a major multicentre national trial of people with pulmonary fibrosis. The study will explore the opportunities and barriers to patient led recruitment into clinical trials and involves Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis, the national pulmonary fibrosis charity, and UK’s lead clinical trialists in this condition. The successful candidate will be fully embedded within an established and thriving clinical trials unit which has links with the MRC-NIHR Trials Methodology Research Partnership. Support and training will be provided in clinical trials methodology, trial design, qualitative and quantitative research methods, medical statistics, report writing and dissemination.

Professor Andrew Wilson, working with the Norwich Clinical Trials Unit has secured funding for a multicentred trial to investigate the use of proton pump inhibitors in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Additional funding has been received for a Study within a Trial (SWAT) which will be a cluster randomised trial of 30 sites throughout the UK. The candidate will work with patient support groups to develop their recruitment strategies, likely to include promotional videos, then assess the success of these strategies in terms of patient participation, knowledge and engagement.

This PhD is suited to applicants with a range of experience and skills including trials managers wishing to develop methodological skills; statisticians wishing to develop clinical trial training and quantitative researchers. The successful candidate will work one day per week within the CTU as part of the trial team, undertaking trial related tasks in order for the candidate to be fully immersed in the operational delivery of the trial in which their research will be embedded. Secondary Supervisors may include Allan Clark (statistics); Jamie Murdoch (qualitative methods/process evaluation); Erika Sims (trial methodology).

Funding Notes

This PhD studentship is funded by Norwich Medical School. Funding comprises Home/EU fees and a stipend of £15,009 and £1000 per annum to support research training. In addition, we anticipate that the successful candidate will also be offered a 0.2FTE contract at Research Assistant grade 7 salary.

Entry requirements: Minimum entry requirement is 2:1 in first degree.
