2D X-ray gives a fundamentally limited view of 3D bodies by superimposing layers. 3D imaging is available through CT scanners, but at higher cost and dose. Digital Tomosynthesis (DT) is an imaging technique that can give a stack of slices through the volume giving many of the 3D benefits of CT but at dramatically lower cost and dose.
Flat Panel X-ray Sources (FPS) are low-cost and portable, they ‘digitize’ the source, and in conjunction with modern dynamic Flat Panel Detectors, low-cost computing and advanced algorithms, allow low-cost, low-dose, 3D imaging (‘Digital Tomosynthesis’ or ‘DT’) in a form factor that is truly portable.
In this project, you will carry out research targeting an improvement of this cutting technology in several key areas:
• Simulation and optimization of FPS, benefiting from accurate and reliable Monte Carlo models that have been developed in collaboration between the company Adaptix and researchers in the Liverpool physics department since 2017.
• Studies into how errors (alignment, emitter performance) impact on medical imaging; experimental studies into the use as secondary diagnostics, developing strategies for mitigation of performance failures, helping understand how to make most of this technology platform.
• Building up on existing R&D activities in QUASAR Group on Carbon Nanotube (CNT) emitters, study opportunities for providing higher beam power; capitalizing on machine learning expertise in the Group; algorithm development targeting image optimization and motion correction.
Throughout the project, you will be provided with training in data science, accelerator and medical physics, electronics, CAD, and optics. The project will include measurements in our labs and at Adaptix where one or several extended secondments are planned.
This project will provide you with a unique opportunity to work on a high impact project which has an established technology basis, strong and long-standing collaboration between all partners and which targets a global market.
Subject to the usual funding approval, the studentship will cover the UK/EU fees; a tax-free maintenance allowance will be paid for 3.5 years.
