The BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials (https://www.bath.ac.uk/research-centres/bre-centre-for-innovative-construction-materials), in the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, is seeking eligible applicants for an PhD studentship expected to start as soon as possible after 30th September 2019. This project is one of a number that are in competition for funding.

Project:

Significant development of additive manufacture in recent years has prompted fast application of such technology in Aeronautical Space Engineering and Mechanical Engineering sectors, whereas its huge potential in Civil Engineering has been poorly realised. To this end, the current project aims at exploring the strength and stability of additively manufactured steel structures under fundamental civil engineering loading cases.

At this early stage of the development of metal 3D printing in Civil Engineering, the applicant is expected to make a significant contribution through the proposed project. The outcome generated will lay a solid foundation and be an important reference in the future in this research field.

A comprehensive experimental testing programme will be carried out at different structural levels to investigate the load carrying capacity of 3D printed steel plates and shells made by different manufacturing routes. Their performance will be assessed and appraised, from which innovative design methodology and computational tools will be developed.

The work will be carried out collaboratively with the Mechanical Engineering department from the University of Bath as well as other institutions, placing a great opportunity for those who are willing to be engaged in cross-discipline collaborations and develop a leadership role in the field of engineering.

Applicant:

Candidates should have a first class honours degree in engineering or a closely related applied science discipline or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant experience. English language requirements must be satisfied at point of application.

Funding Notes

Applications are invited from UK/EU candidates only. The ‘Michael Dickson’ studentship, subject to confirmation of funding, is expected to be fully funded by the BRE Trust and will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and maintenance in line with the UKRI Doctoral stipend rate (£15,009 per annum, 2019/20 rate) for 3.5 years full-time study. The studentship is also expected to include an allowance for travel and subsistence as well as some funds for project expenditure to acquire essential materials and minor equipment.
