About the Project

For all patients with bladder cancer, the initial surgical procedure comprises endoscopic bladder cancer surgery: transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT) (This surgical procedure originated in the 1930s and has changed little since. It is contrary to the basic principles of surgical oncology: the tumour is removed piecemeal with a rigid resectoscope and diathermy loop whilst the bladder is irrigated with glycine.

This project will design, manufacture and test a prototype of a disposable device for bladder tumour resectoscopes that would cover individual bladder tumours and permit TURBT within a more restricted volume of the bladder.

Funding Notes

For outstanding candidates there may be the opportunity to apply for a School of Engineering Scholarship.
