About the Project

This project is concerned with the development of numerical methods for computational limit analysis and design optimization of earthworks, retaining structures and foundations. It builds on the ground breaking development of the Discontinuity Layout Optimization (DLO) method in the Department and associated commercial software (see and seeks to enhance the associated analysis techniques and develop them further into robust design optimization methodologies that can reduce carbon costs in terms of both materials usage and materials movement. An aptitude for computer programming would be essential for this project. Applicants should have (or expect to have) a first class degree or equivalent in an engineering or computer science subject.
