About the Project

Loughborough University is a top-ten rated university in England for research intensity (REF2014) and an outstanding 66% of the work of Loughborough’s academic staff who were eligible to be submitted to the REF was judged as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, compared to a national average figure of 43%.

By choosing a doctoral programme from the Institute for Design Innovation at Loughborough University London, you’ll work alongside academics who are leaders in their field. The Institute for Design Innovation is actively engaged in international research projects concerning the value of design, making meaning, service and policy design and design practice.

Project Detail
This project will be eligible for application to the Techné Doctoral Training Partnership funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) which supports high quality candidates to pursue the ‘craft’ of research through innovative, interdisciplinary and creative approaches to the study of the arts and humanities.

TECHNE provides an outstanding graduate training experience, drawing together the best of traditional scholarship, history, theory and practice across ten higher education institutions in London and the South East with extensive collaboration from 15 world-leading partners including the Natural History Museum, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, the Science Museum and Crafts Council.

As a consortium member of Techné, the Institute for Design Innovation welcomes outstanding candidates with a research interest in exploring the application of design into the context of the multiple challenges that disability imposes on a billion people in the world today. Disability creates exclusions in education, work, civic participation and human well-being, and the current design practices, approaches and thinking are seemingly unable to widely contribute to the removal or mitigation of the effects of these exclusions.

In many cases design engages in the production of inventive artefacts and technical solutions, which however fail to diffuse widely as innovations due to the lack of supporting systems. The doctoral project is expected to critically explore how design can contribute to meaningful value generation in service ecosystems. These systems are seen to be central elements in fostering and enabling access to wellbeing, education and livelihood opportunities for disabled individuals. The project is expected to build on and contribute to service design, public policymaking and critical design innovation and is expected to have a global context and reach.

The successful candidate will be based at the Loughborough University London campus, located on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London. The research is expected to contribute significantly to the activities and impact of the Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDIH), and joint initiative of Loughborough University London and academic partners, aiming at building a movement to accelerate disability innovation for a fairer world.
