Designing vehicles for Autonomy – understanding safety and performance of novel vehicle structures

3DEC (Deakin Digital Design and Engineering Centre)

, Thursday, December 31, 2020 Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

There is an urgent need to change our Australian vehicle design practices to remain competitive for the coming disruption of autonomous vehicles. Autonomous vehicles will disrupt the automotive sector because vehicles will have a dual purpose of private and public usage. An owner’s vehicle will be able to earn money for the owner while the owner is busy at work. This change in vehicle usage will change the interior configurations of vehicles, with increasing emphasis on working spaces, and clear separations between private and public spaces. Enabling this change will need deeper understanding of the structural implications of having new configurations of passengers, as well as new ways they may interact with the vehicle.

This project will be conducted with the Ford Motor Company, which retains a significant design, engineering, and testing presence in Australia. Ford Australia is still responsible for the design of global platforms. The chosen student will interact with both local Ford engineers, as well as having regular meetings with the Research and Innovation Centre in Dearborn – Michigan (USA).

Funding Notes

This project is only open for Australian domestic students (Australian or NZ citizens or those who have Australian Permanent Residency)

The scholarship is AUD$40,000 p.a. for three years. In addition the successful applicant will be given the opportunity to undertake a tailored leadership/change management program to increase the applicant's employability skills.
