About the Project

Gastropod-borne parasitic diseases affect over 300 million people worldwide and make up several of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) listed by the World Health Organisation. These diseases can be difficult to control as they often have life cycles involving multiple hosts and can be transmitted from a variety of animal reservoirs.

 Gastropods act as intermediate hosts for a variety of nematode and trematode species that affect the health of humans, livestock and companion animals including schistosomiasis (caused by the parasite genus Schistosoma), fascioliasis (Fasciola), angiostrongyliasis (Angiostrongylus) and food-borne trematodiasis. This project will use PCR-based infection detection techniques to determine the incidence of parasite infection within gastropod populations. It will determine which species of snails are infected with human and veterinary parasites and which are most susceptible to infection. It will also examine the incidence of non-human parasites in snail populations that have the potential to mislead surveys of human parasite infection in snails. Genetic variation in snail populations will also be examined to examine the link between snail resistance and parasite infection.
