Many water networks and infrastructure around the world were constructed over 400 years ago, which has created a dilemma for the current water companies who need to increase their flows and pressures to meet increasing customer demands. However, in many cases this puts added strain on the pipes within the current system and it greatly increases leak and burst events. Currently, a large amount of water is wasted due to leakage and burst water pipes.
Designed Network Solutions (DNS) aims to develop design solutions that allow this required pressure increase, doing so in a controlled manner to protect aging assets and give added longevity. This PhD will review network control data sourced from water companies to adapt a unique design which achieves water demand requirements through every district metered area. This design will aim to deal with aging assets and create a network profile to calmly distribute water from source all the way to the end user. This will result in more effective water management and less water waste.
Applicants should have a 2:1 or first degree in an engineering discipline. The Graduate Researcher will be supervised by Professor George Aggidis, Dr Xiandong Ma and DNS. DNS is a network design company with a range of bespoke products, that offers solutions to water and wastewater companies. They implement designs that will save on water production, electrical and maintenance costs. Their work helps the environment by reducing water extraction, lowering carbon footprint and extends the asset life of already installed products.
This project is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
