Dr B Goult, Dr J Hiscock  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

A funded PhD position is available in the fields of protein biochemistry and supramolecular chemistry.
The successful candidate will develop a novel class of protein-based smart materials which absorb mechanical force, be it through impact, stretching, compression, etc. This will be achieved by combining protein chemistry with supramolecular and polymer chemistry to harness the unique mechanical properties of cellular shock-absorbing proteins. This will generate conceptually novel Synthetic Biology (SynBio) materials.

This PhD will be jointly supervised by Dr Ben Goult (Biosciences) and Dr Jennifer Hiscock (SPS) who will provide interdisciplinary training at the interface of biochemistry/ synthetic biology/ biophysics and supramolecular chemistry/ polymer chemistry/ application-based transitional research. The successful candidate will be based at the University of Kent’s main campus in Canterbury.
This is a unique opportunity to develop experimental skills in protein expression and purification, study of protein-protein interactions, chemical synthesis, NMR, mass spectrometry, rheometry and microscopy to build novel materials utilising evolutionary-developed building blocks for real-world applications.

This PhD Studentship is due to start in September 2019
