  Prof K Jiang  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

The project is focused at developing a high performance turbocharger for cars in order to reduce pollution and improve fuel efficiency. The turbocharger technology is developed in the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, which has a worldwide reputation in microengine research. We are currently looking for a student in the research and development of the turbocharger.

The student will need to learn the micro/technology and turbomachinery techniques developed in the group and apply them to the turbocharger.

The PhD research project will involve the following research areas in the project:
• Rotor system design and balancing;
• Air bearing design, fabrication and tests;
• Turbocharger assembly and tests;
• Publication of research results.

The student is expected have a mechanical engineering background. EU students are expected to have a first class degree in mechanical engineering to get a scholarship. Non-EU students are expected to have the equivalent academic result. Students with MSc in engine related area and publications are highly encouraged to apply. Self funded applicants are expected to have a 2.1 degree or equivalent.

Funding Notes

For an EU student, the scholarship is likely to be £14,500 per annum for three years.
