About the Project

Working on the boundaries of areas of knowledge in the workplace provides challenges as well as the potential for innovation. Crossing disciplinary borders is described as akin to negotiating different cultures where know-how developed within disciplines (or also professions, sectors or even departments) could be conceptualised as knowledge cultures which are (re)formed through language, practice, structures of power and justice, and archives ‘of narratives of identity and tradition’ (Scott & Hofmeyer, 2007). Crossing the boundaries between knowledge cultures’ territoriality might require developing levels of cultural competence that enhance mutual respect, understanding and interaction (Kim-Godwin et al., 2001). The competence needed to work at the knowledge boundary between different cultures on the one hand and between different organisational cultures of knowledge on the other might have a great deal in common. The question of organisational learning and training to develop the capacity to deal with knowledge boundary crossing is an underdeveloped issue and needs further empirical study to address both the challenges and innovation advantages of such boundary work in organisations.

The aim of this PhD project is to identify development, training and/or organisational learning potential for knowledge boundary crossing in the workplace.

The supervisory team is composed of experts in the field of organisational learning and management processes. Dr Dane Lukic has been involved in several projects funded by the EU on intercultural competence (EMIC, PROFIC) as well as conducts research in knowledge boundary crossing in the workplace. Dr Bipasha Ahmed has worked as an academic psychologist as both teacher and researcher for over 20 years, with a specific interest in inequalities research. Dr Zhi Wang is an expert in leadership and entrepreneurship and has supervised a number of successful PhD students.

Candidates are requested to submit a more detailed proposal (maximum of 2000 words) on the project area as part of the application. In this proposal, the applicant can use their knowledge and interests to propose a more detailed avenue of research based on the overall aim of the proposed PhD study.

Applicants with relevant background in organisational learning, human resource development, organisational sciences, organisational psychology, intercultural studies and interdisciplinarity studies are invited to apply. Interdisciplinary backgrounds and degree/experience related to aspects of knowledge boundary crossing are welcome. Previous work or educational background in intercultural, interdisciplinary, interprofessional and intersectoral processes is desirable.
