This project is part of a 4-year Dual PhD degree programme between the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan and the University of Liverpool in England. As Part of the NTHU-UoL Dual PhD Award students are in the unique position of being able to gain 2 PhD awards at the end of their degree from two internationally recognised world leading Universities. As well as benefiting from a rich cultural experience, Students can draw on large scale national facilities of both countries and create a worldwide network of contacts across 2 continents.
Food Waste Management System (FWMS) is designed to help organizations and individuals manage their food waste effectively. This essential system involves the proper handling, predicting, storage, and disposal of food waste. An efficient FWMS can save money for businesses, organizations, and households. Furthermore, we can reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, hence reducing the carbon footprint and contributing to environmental sustainability. Reducing food waste is our social responsibility to ensure more food is available for those who need it.
As with any technology that involves the collection and processing of data, there is a privacy issue associated with any FWMS. To develop the system, we need to collect a lot of data about individuals and organizations, including their food consumption patterns, buying habits, and disposal practices. If this data falls into the wrong hands, it can be misused for nefarious purposes. To overcome this limitation, data policies and security measures have been developed. However, these methods show limitations as users’ data still need to be collected in one central server, which strongly violates the users' privacy. In this project, we will develop a novel FWMS that relies on federated learning (FL). Our system does not require collecting users' data, hence ensuring privacy while can provide clear and concise messages for organizations and individuals to manage their food waste more effectively.
