Developing graphene-based antifouling ultrafiltration membranes

Project Description

Recently, carbon nanomaterials including carbon nanotubes and graphene have emerged as promising membrane materials. In particular, graphene oxide (GO), a chemical derivative of graphene with oxygen functionalities, has attracted widespread interest due to its exceptional water permeation and tunable molecular sieving properties, as well as realistic prospects for industrial-scale production [1-5]. Most of the research efforts so far are concentrated on designing membranes with nanometre size pores for water desalination or nanofiltration. On the other hand, membranes with larger pores are also in high demand for several ultrafiltration separation technologies such as wastewater treatment, reverse osmosis pre-treatment, and separations in the food, dairy, paper, textile, chemical, and biotechnology industries. One of the main drawbacks of such existing membranes is its flux decline caused by membrane fouling. In this proposal, we aim to develop a graphene-based antifouling membrane for ultrafiltration.

Applicants should have or expect to achieve at least a 2.1 honours degree in Physics/Chemistry/Materials Science/Chemical Engineering
