Project Description

Polymer nanocomposites have attracted substantial interest from both academia and industry over the past two decades because the addition of a few percent of nanoparticles can produce significant enhancements in the properties of polymer matrices. Graphene is an atom-thick layer of carbon atoms, with a high strength, stiffness and specific surface area. This project aims to develop high-performance polymer-graphene nanocomposites for engineering applications. It will address several major technical challenges associated with scale-up production of polymer-graphene nanocomposites while developing a good scientific understanding of these materials. The potential candidate will receive training in a broad spectrum of techniques in relation to polymer processing, nanomaterials engineering, micro- and nano- structural characterisation, evaluation of processing and engineering properties, and beyond.

Funding Notes

Candidates should be self-funded, sponsored, or applying for Scholarships. The University and the Faculty of Engineering award PhD scholarships for Home, EU, and International students on a competitive basis every year. Candidates should have or expect to gain a good Honours degree with 2i or above in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline.

If English is not your first language then you must have International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) average of 6.5 or above with at least 6.0 in each component.
