At a critical time of supporting net zero for climate emergency factors this project will undertake to investigate and develop solutions to support net zero outcomes for the UK shipbuilding sector and supporting infrastructure. This is a strategically important project for all partners and stakeholders involved. This is a fully funded PhD including fees and student stipend over 3 years.
In partnership with Babcock International Group the PhD researcher will engage with industry partners, supply chains and key stakeholders to develop net zero pathways, outcomes and solutions which will include:
• Assessing the current carbon related operational emissions from shipbuilding, embodied carbon and LCA factors.
• Reviewing ship building policies and frameworks aligned to improving environmental and sustainability outcomes
• Engaging across the Babcock International Group organisation and support departments including estates and infrastructure operations
• Aligning all outcomes and pathways to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
• Research the measures to align environmental outputs and impacts, which support future net zero pathways
• Engaging with a range of external stakeholders and supply chains, including other UK ship building partner organisations
• Evaluating evidence underpinning societal benefits and future opportunities
• Providing a pathway to enhance the net zero approach by the UK shipbuilding sector
This proposed PhD scholarship and project are set within the above action areas. The student will be supported by staff within the School of Engineering and Centre for Future Infrastructure, University of Edinburgh and Babcock International Group. Meetings will also be undertaken on site and off site, including at Babcock premises at Rosyth and the King’s Buildings Campus in Edinburgh. The primary location will be based within School of Engineering, Kings Building Campus, University of Edinburgh.
This project will build on the existing collaborative approach between Babcock International Group and the University of Edinburgh.
The ideal student will have good quantitative skills, understanding of sustainability, ESGs, net zero, environmental factors and carbon reductions landscape. Prior qualifications such as undergraduate (min 2:1 degree) or master’s degree are preferable.
Applications are encouraged from candidates with prior degrees in Environmental Sciences, Civil Engineering, Building Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Sustainability or Energy.
