Project Description

Applications are invited from students for PhD research in the development and application of NMR spectroscopy for structure-property relationships in colloidal and related systems. This post is part of a large collaborative project involving the University of Cambridge, University of Manchester, ISIS and Unilever and aims to develop an understanding of fluids used in formulated home and personal care products. By combining theoretical and experimental methods, the project will obtain an understanding of the relationship between the process history of the materials and their structure-property relationships.

NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) is arguably one of the most powerful analytical methods for providing detailed physical and chemical information. It can provide comprehensive information on molecular/colloidal structure, dynamics and interactions, but only if the signals of individual chemical sites are resolved. In this project we will develop new NMR experiments for mixture analysis with special focus on viscous, typically non Newtonian fluids.

This PhD project spans a range of disciplines including chemistry, physics, statistics/chemometrics, and programming. It will provide extensive training in a range of research methods, allowing the student to acquire a broad set of skills including practical NMR spectroscopy, spin physics, statistical data analysis, software production and scientific programming.

Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a good (I or II.1) honours degree in a relevant subject. Applications are particularly welcome from students with experience in NMR spectroscopy and/or instrumental methods.

This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found. A formal application must be submitted to be considered. The Studentship is expected to commence from 1 October 2018 but earlier start dates will be considered.

Funding Notes

The Studentship covers tuition fees and maintenance for 3.5 years (£14,553 p.a. in 2017/18). Due to funding restrictions the studentship is open to UK and EU nationals only.
