Applications are invited for a fully-funded Master by Research studentship (1-year research focus programme) to be undertaken in the Renewable and Low carbon Energy at Cranfield University, in collaboration with a leading European speciality chemical manufacturer in the field of carbon capture using functional polymeric materials. Carbon capture is one of the key building blocks of energy decarbonisation and transition towards the UK net-zero target. This project aims to evaluate the performance of a series of functional polymeric sorbents supplied by the industrial partner for CO2 capture applications experimentally and using the state-of-the-art Cranfield facilities.

Carbon capture is one of the key building blocks of energy decarbonisation and transition towards the UK net-zero target. This project aims to evaluate the performance of series of functional polymeric sorbents supplied by the industrial partner for CO2 capture applications experimentally and using the state-of-the-art Cranfield facilities. The successful candidate will characterise the performance of amine functional polymeric sorbents for different carbon capture applications and advise the industrial partner to advance the material formulation further.
The student will be expected to plan the work programme, review literature, conduct independent research, report progress to the industrial partner, and disseminate the outcomes as patent, high-impact journals, conferences and workshops (in agreement with the industrial partner). In addition, the student will work closely with the project partner and have an opportunity to explore the formulation and production of polymeric CO2 sorbents in a commercial environment. Moreover, funding is available for the student to attend workshops and network meetings.
Entry requirements
Applicants should have a first or upper second-class UK honours degree, or equivalent in a related discipline (such as chemical engineering and material sciences), with prior experience in gas sorption and purification, and ideally sorbent development, characterisation, and performance evaluation. The successful candidate should be innovative and creative, have a high degree of personal motivation, have a good command of oral and written English, and be able to work independently and in a team.
