About the Project

This project aims to investigate the structural performance/behaviour of new pultruded FRP cellular ‘PolyCell’ – concrete hybrid beams. The study will focus on developing a shear connection using pultruded FRP cellular beam profiles with lightweight concrete.

Objectives
1) Material characterisation of the pultruded FRP profiles to determine their elastic constants for analytical studies.
2) Determination of optimum dowel size, spacing, bonded length and their influence on slip and shear resistance through a series of push-out testing campaign.
3) The outcome of objective (2) will facilitate the design, development and fabrication of prototype FRP ‘PolyCell’ hybrid beams for testing under four-point static loading configuration, recording failure mechanisms, load-deflection responses and stiffnesses. Before this, the proposition and development of theoretical design models based on Eurocode specifications, as well as validating finite element modelling methodology, will be undertaken.
4) Following modelling validation, develop and advance the models to determine the influence of parametric variation studies including the influence of material properties, (concrete and FRP profile), size effects of the hybrid system, cross-section dimensions, dowel configuration and characteristics.
Develop design guidelines and closed-form equations, compatible with existing and allied standards such as in the Eurocode to assist engineers in designing such systems.
