The graduate researcher will work with the academic supervisors from the Lancaster University Management School and colleagues from the partner business, Repic Ltd, to create a toolkit that measures the carbon emissions of the collection and recycling of electronic waste in the UK.

Repic Ltd operates not-for-profit producer compliance schemes for waste electrical and waste electronic equipment (WEEE), batteries and packaging. Repic funds the collection, transport, and treatment of around half of all separately collected household WEEE each year.

The successful candidate will utilise existing lifecycle analysis tools to create a carbon emission calculator tailored for Repic’s activities. This tool will be based on established methodologies including one developed by the WEEE forum, which Repic has access to. The candidate will need to gather intelligence on collection activities of the partner business and their stakeholders in order to create an appropriate toolkit. This will subsequently provide input for the route and planning optimisation models for the possible future scenarios of electronic waste collection and recycling in the UK.

The successful applicant must have a 2:1 or 1st class degree in science, engineering or management, have experience with optimisation models and programming, and shows a strong interest in this area.

Enterprise and collaborative partners

This Masters by Research is a collaborative research project between Lancaster University, and Repic Ltd . It will be supervised by Dr Burak Boyaci – Senior Lecturer, Lancaster University Management School (LUMS), Dr Lingxuan Lui – Lecturer in Sustainability, Lancaster University and Dr Ahmed Kheri – Senior Lecturer, LUMS.

REPIC operates not-for-profit producer compliance schemes for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), batteries and packaging. REPIC supports its members in meeting their legal producer responsibility obligations with cost-effective, market-leading compliance solutions.

REPIC funds the collection, transport, and treatment of around half of all separately collected household WEEE each year.
